Understanding Crown Problems

Dental crowns are one of the most commonly used dental restorations. They can solve a wide range of concerns, from covering a discolored tooth and holding a bridge in place to restoring a broken tooth or protecting a decayed tooth. A dental crown is typically made of porcelain. It acts as a “cap” that covers all visible portions of a tooth above the gum line.

While dental crowns can last between 5 and 15 years, its lifespan is based on multiple factors such as how well the crown was originally fabricated, how strong the cement is, how much wear and tear it is exposed to, how well you care for it and other oral health conditions. Dental crowns are designed to be a durable and long-lasting restoration, but they are not invincible. Just like any other dental restoration, a crown is vulnerable to damage or failure.

Many crown problems are caused when the cement washes out from under the crown. This is a common occurrence, especially if you have had the crown for many years. When the cement leaks out, the crown margins change. The crown can then become loose and even fall out. Another telltale sign of the cement washing out is if your floss is catching or shredding in the area of the crown. Your dentist will monitor your crown margins at your routine dental exams.

If your crown is loose or becoming dislodged, it is no longer protecting the tooth the way it should. Bacteria can leak in and cause decay to the underlying tooth. Always contact your dentist if you crown feels loose, falls out or is suddenly sensitive to hot and cold. In such cases, your crown may need replacement.
