Brushing is essential if you want optimal oral health. However, just picking up any toothbrush and dragging it across your teeth isn’t enough. It is also important to have the right toothbrush and use it correctly. If not, you may actually do more harm than good when it comes to your oral hygiene. When buying a toothbrush, consider these three things:
- Bristles
- When it comes to bristles, harder is not always better. Most adults are good candidates for medium bristles. However, soft bristles can be great for those that suffer from gum disease. Always ask your dentist if you are unsure about which bristle type is best for you.
- Size
- Yes, size really does matter when it comes to your toothbrush. You need to be able to use your toothbrush well and maintain proper dexterity. An oversized toothbrush can make that difficult. On the other hand, one too small can require extra effort and undue strain. For the average adult, a toothbrush head that is ½ inch wide and 1 inch long works best.
- Type
- When it comes to toothbrush type, you have the option of choosing manual versus electric. While an electric toothbrush has its advantages, you can maintain a strong oral hygiene routine with either – as long as you are using your manual toothbrush correctly. Many patients love the minimal effort and deep clean that an electric toothbrush provides, while others prefer the control they have with a manual brush.
How to Brush
While it may seem like a simple task, brushing your teeth requires some know how. Failing to use proper technique could harm your gums or leave harmful plaque and bacteria on your teeth after you’re done. When brushing, try to hold the bristles towards your gums at a 45 degree angle, this allows you to sweep under the gum line as well as polish your teeth. You don’t have to use a hard force. If your bristles fray shortly after getting a new toothbrush, this is a sign you are brushing too hard. Plaque can be effectively removed by gentle scrubbing. Lastly, don’t forget to brush your tongue for fresh breath and a healthier mouth.
